You'll Need

    • Clean, dry, recycled-tubs or tins
    • Construction paper
    • Ruler
    • Scissors
    • Tacky Glue
    • Assorted decorations, such as ribbon, colored masking tape and stickers
    • Wooden dowel
    • Colored masking tape

Instructions

  1. To start, measure the width of your container. Cut a strip of paper the width of your tub. This will be wrapped around the tub, like a label. If you are using a large tub you may need a few pieces of paper to cover the circumference of the tub.

  2. Once the paper is cut, let preschoolers decorate the paper by gluing on cut shapes, pressing on stickers or drawing with markers. Let dry.

  3. Spread a line of tacky glue on the un-decorated side of the paper. Glue the paper to the tub, decorated side facing out. Wrap the paper around the tub, and glue the loose end to secure. Let dry.

  4. For a finishing touch, use ribbon or colored masking tape to create stripes around the top and bottom of the drum, hiding the seams.

  5. Flip the drum over, and pound away on the bottom of the tub. For the best sound, remove the lid. Real drums are hollow!

  6. To make a drumstick, wrap a wooden dowel with colored masking tape. Make a tape ball and place this at one end of the dowel. Wrap the ball with tape to cover.
