The Sweet Potato!
Interview with Estelle Harris

On "Seinfeld," Estelle Harris was constantly cranky as George Costanza's mom. But in "Toy Story 2," she provides the voice of Mrs. Potato Head®, the sweetest potato this side of Idaho! Here's what she has to say about her a-peel-ing character, the delightfully devoted wife of that super-spud, Mr. Potato Head®.

How did you get the part of Mrs. Potato Head?
[The people at Pixar] called my agent and said, "Do you think Estelle Harris would like to be the voice of Mrs. Potato Head in 'Toy Story 2'?" My agent called me and I thought about it for one billionth of a second and said, "Yes!" I remember all the fuss over "Toy Story," which I hadn't seen. So they sent me a tape and it was wonderful! To me, it's not animation -- [the characters are] human.

Were you excited about pairing up with Don Rickles [Mr. Potato Head]?
I was a little in awe of him. I had never met him, but I think he's a genius and was nervous about meeting him. Then I thought I wouldn't get to meet him because we [record] alone. But a couple of weeks ago we met, and I'm madly in love with him! He is such a pussycat -- so sweet and giving.

How would you describe Mrs. Potato Head?
I built an imaginary background for her in my mind. [I do that] whenever I become a character. Mrs. Potato Head had a mother that kept saying, "Get married! Get married!" But she would only marry somebody she adored, and she -- and her mother -- had given up hope. Then, here comes this knight in shining armor, Mr. Potato Head. I'm sure the two of them just looked at each other and were smitten. They married late [in life], but they're both so happy! She's grateful that she has a husband she adores and can take care of. And he'll do anything for her … even take off his moustache!

Are you like her?
Well, I don't act like that with my husband. We've been married more than 40 years, and if I yell at him he's grateful for the attention! [laughs] I don't think you can compare us. Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head are still on their honeymoon, and I think they're going to be on their honeymoon forever.

What kind of mother do you think Mrs. Potato Head will be?
Oh my gosh! Before her kids' noses run she'll wipe them, and before they cough she'll give them cough syrup!

ESTELLE HARRIS (Mrs. Potato Head) provides the voice for this delightfully ap-peel-ing character. Her husband calls her his little sweet potato, and she likes to butter him up. As Mr. Potato Head's devoted wife, she keeps an eye out for him and sees that he's packed the right appendages for all occasions.

Harris is probably best known as Mrs. Costanza, George's cranky mother on the hit television show "Seinfeld." Other television credits include "Good Advice," "Night Court," "Star Trek: Voyager," "In the House," "Mad About You," "Law and Order," "Cybill," and "Married with Children." She's also appeared on an episode of Showtime's "Fallen Angels" and on "The Westside Waltz" on CBS. Her film credits include "Once Upon a Time in America," "Stand & Deliver," "This Is Your Life," "Perfect Alibi," "Out to Sea," "My Giant," and "Chairman of the Board."

In addition to her television and film work, Harris is an accomplished stage actress. She's been happily married to her husband for 40 years and is a proud mother and grandmother who expects never to retire from her prolific acting career.
