JIM CARTER (Detective Armstrong) began his acting career in repertory theaters before joining the Royal National Theatre to appear in, among others, Sir Richard Eyre's award-winning production of "Guys and Dolls," Bill Bryden's "The Passion," Sir Peter Hall's "The Oresteia," and director Christopher Morahan's "Man and Superman." Work with other theater companies followed, including roles in the Royal Shakespeare Company's production of "The Wizard of Oz" and "The Infernal Machine."
With more than 50 productions to his credit, Carter is very familiar to British television audiences for his wide-ranging work in dramas, series, and serials. Among his most notable appearances include Jon Amiel's "The Singing Detective," Mick Jackson's "A Very British Coup," "Stalin" with Robert Duvall, and "A Dangerous Man" with Ralph Fiennes.
Carter is perhaps most well known for his work in motion pictures. Among his more than 20 feature films to date are "Top Secret," "A Private Function" with Maggie Smith, "Haunted Honeymoon" with Gene Wilder, director Nicolas Roeg's "The Witches," Ken Russell's "The Rainbow," "Black Beauty," "The Madness of King George," "Richard III," "Brassed Off," the Academy Award®-winning "Shakespeare in Love," and, most recently, Uli Edel's "The Little Vampire."
