President Lyndon B. Johnson presents Walt Disney with the Medal of Freedom at the White House. The citation reads: "Artist and impresario, in the course of entertaining an age, Walt Disney has created an American folklore."

In February, the album "Meet The Beatles!," and the single, "I Want To Hold Your Hand," go gold, and the Beatles appear on "The Ed Sullivan Show," firmly establishing Beatlemania and ushering in The British Invasion.

"Mary Poppins" is released. Despite Beatlemania, the soundtrack shoots to No. 1 on the Billboard chart for 14 weeks.

The New York World's Fair opens, featuring four attractions developed by Disney, including It's A Small World.
