Eco-Action through Action Sports!
XGE Recycling Success
- X Games 12 – 71% waste diversion rate
- Winter X Games 11 – 68% waste diversion rate
WASTE MINIMIZATION
- To reduce waste sent to local landfills, spectators, staff, and athletes will sort waste into custom three-way bins that collect recyclable beverage containers, compostable organic materials, and trash. The recyclable and compostable materials will be processed at Community Recycling, a specialized materials recovery facility in the San Fernando Valley.
- Cardboard, construction materials, metals, electronics, and plastic shrink wrap will also be recycled at X Games 13.
- Grease generated from staff catering foods will be turned into bio-diesel fuel.
BUYING GREEN
- Wood used to construct ramps at X Games is made from trees grown in certified, responsibly-managed forests.
- The event media guide is printed on post-consumer, recycled paper and has a recycled plastic binding.
- Serviceware items, such as cups, plates, and napkins used in the Staff Catering tent are made from renewable and compostable materials, including PLA plastic made from corn and Bagasse, a fiber made from sugarcane by-product.
CLEAN AIR
- Spectators who utilize the LA County Metro system or carpool (4 or more per car) to The Home Depot Center will receive a special prize in recognition of their efforts to rideshare.
- X Games Environmentality and the National Arbor Day Foundation are planting 500 trees on behalf of each athlete participating in X Games 13.
COMMUNICATION / EDUCATION
- X Games Environmentality facts will be shared with spectators via the Jumbotron and venue wide.
- Eco-facts and program guidelines are posted in staff areas to encourage participation and ensure consistency.
- Environmental Best Practices Guidelines will be distributed to participating vendors and the catering supplier.
- A comprehensive communications campaign for both spectators and staff includes informational posters at the event and on-line resources.
- An X Games Environmentality education table will be stationed in the Staff Catering tent.
- Hosted by Team ESPN and X Games Environmentality, eighty children from the Los Angeles Recreation and Park Camps section and from the LA WOW (Wonderful Outdoor World) program will be attending the X Games as Team ESPN and XGE Ambassadors, job shadow XGE staff, meet some of the athletes, and check out the X Games events!
