X GAMES COMMITMENT TO THE ENVIRONMENT
WASTE MINIMIZATION
- To reduce waste sent to local landfills, spectators, staff, and athletes will sort waste into custom three-way bins that collect recyclable beverage containers, compostable organic materials, and trash. The recyclable and compostable materials will be processed at Community Recycling, a specialized materials recovery facility in the San Fernando Valley.
- Cardboard, construction materials, metals, electronics, and plastic shrink wrap will also be recycled at X Games 14.
- Grease generated from staff catering foods will be turned into bio-diesel fuel at GeoGreen Biofuels, a specialized recycling facility in Los Angeles.
- Skate ramps from previous events are stored year-to-year and reused, thus reducing the demand for new materials. Wherever possible, wood used to construct the ramps is from responsibly-managed forests.
BUYING GREEN
- The event media guide is printed on post-consumer, recycled paper.
- Serviceware items, such as cups, plates, and napkins used in the Staff Catering tent are made from renewable and compostable materials, including PLA plastic made from corn and Bagasse, a fiber made from sugarcane by-product.
- Water refilling stations are strategically placed around the X Games venue thereby reducing the need for single-serving containers. Staff will be issued reusable water bottles and encouraged to refill them.
CLEAN AIR
- Spectators who utilize the LA County Metro system to The Home Depot Center will receive a special prize in recognition of their efforts to rideshare.
- X Games Environmentality and the National Arbor Day Foundation are planting 500 trees on behalf of the athletes participating in X Games 14.
- X Games Environmentality Presents Tour de X in X Fest to allow people to learn about and interact with cutting edge alternative energy technology. Spectators will be able to recharge their cell phones, cameras, and other personal electronics, just by riding specially outfitted Tour de X bikes. Tour de X will also demonstrate ways that people can implement environmentally friendly solutions into their lifestyles.
COMMUNICATION / EDUCATION
- X Games Environmentality factoids will be shared with spectators via the large video screens throughout the venue.
- Eco-facts and program guidelines are posted in staff areas to encourage participation and ensure consistency.
- Environmental Best Practices Guidelines have been distributed to participating vendors and the catering supplier.
