WHAT IS XGE?

WHAT IS X GAMES ENVIRONMENTALITY?

X Games Environmentality (XGE) is a comprehensive program that drives environmental stewardship through all facets of event planning. Or, as we like to call it, Eco-Action for Action Sports.

By bringing environmental initiatives into the spotlight, XGE minimizes the impact of the X Games event through the following:

  • Waste minimization
  • Use of renewable resources
  • Purchase of environmentally conscious products
  • Pollution prevention

X Games is a leader in hosting environmentally responsible sporting events.

WHAT IS XGE DOING TO ENCOURAGE ECO-ACTION AT THE X GAMES EVENT?

  • Spectators, staff, and athletes can sort waste into custom three-way bins that collect recyclables, compostable organic materials, and trash to help reduce waste sent to local landfills.
  • Cups, plates, and napkins used in the Staff Catering tent are made from renewable and compostable materials.
  • X Games staff is also recycling office paper, printer and copier toner cartridges, electronic waste, cardboard, wood, film plastic, and other materials behind the scenes.

WHAT ITEMS GO WHERE?

Recycling:

  • Empty plastic bottles, aluminum and steel cans, and glass bottles can be put into recycling bins.

Compost:

  • Food scraps, soiled paper, napkins, tissues, paper cups, paper plates and PLA plastic (#7) are all acceptable as compostable items. Please refer to posted signage.

Trash:

  • Anything that cannot go into the recycle or compost bins is considered trash. This may include chip and candy wrappers, plastic bags, traditional plastic plates and bowls, disposable plastic utensils, or some plastic containers, such as the #5 plastic and #6 Styrofoam® "to-go" containers.

TIME OUT! WHAT IS COMPOST, YOU ASK ...?

  • Compost is organic matter such as food scraps and lawn clippings that can be processed into a rich soil and used to enhance plant growth in yards, gardens, parks, and farm fields.

WHY SHOULD I ...?

Recycle:

  • Recycling is incredibly important in protecting the environment. Making sure that resources can be used again saves energy and water, conserves virgin resources, and reduces the need for additional mining.

WHERE DO THE TRASH, RECYCLABLES, AND COMPOST GO AFTER THE X GAMES?

Recycled materials:

  • Collected recyclables go to Community Recycling, a specialized “Materials Recovery Facility” where items are sorted and sold to companies that use the recyclables to manufacture new products such as bottles, boxes, newspaper, office paper, t-shirts, blankets, and tote bags.

Compostable materials:

  • Compostable items collected at X Games 14 will be transported to Community Recycling where they will be combined with yard debris and other organic material.
  • Compostable materials are placed into piles that are either watered and mixed up, or just left alone until all of the materials have broken down and been transformed into small particles. The materials are then bagged and sold to gardeners, homeowners, or farmers who use the material to improve soil.

Trash:

  • Trash is transferred to a local landfill and buried in an airtight, watertight tomb. Materials in landfills typically do not decompose. Instead they remain in solid form for an eternity, taking up valuable space.

WHAT'S HAPPENING BEHIND THE SCENES AT THE X GAMES OFFICES?

The X Games staff strives year-round to reduce their environmental impact through their everyday activities at the office.

  • After years without a sink in the X Games office kitchen, the X Games staffers finally put their foot down and asked the landlord to run a water line. Now the X Games staffers use only reusable plates, cups and utensils which they can clean after use. They have completely eliminated the need for disposables and dramatically reduced the amount of waste created by eating and snacking at the office!
  • The X Games office has always had a 5 Gallon water dispenser for refilling bottles and glasses in order to reduce the need for individual single-use water bottles. But now, in a bold move to go one step further, plans are being reviewed to install a water filtration system so that water from the tap can be used for everyday drinking, thus eliminating the need for the 5 Gallon jugs!
  • A beverage container recycling bin is located in the office kitchen for all single serving beverage containers.
  • Post-consumer recycled content paper is used for copiers, printers and fax machines. Documents are photocopied double sided and when the backside of the paper is available, it is used for scratch paper.
  • There is an electronics recycling bin at the office for cd's, dvd's, electronics, cables, printer cartridges, and batteries.
  • All surplus supplies and apparel from the X Games events are donated to various organizations to help people in need.
