2005 Kid All-Star Winners

Anthony L., 14
Suamico, Wisconsin

2005 Kid All-Star Winner At age 10, after visiting his grandmother at the hospital, Anthony L. created the Heavenly Hats Program to collect hats and distribute them to cancer patients who had lost their hair. Today, Anthony's program serves 120 hospitals around the world.

Q. How did you start the project?

Anthony: My first step was going to local businesses and asking the managers if we could put buckets out in their stores, so the next time a customer came in, they could drop a hat off. [Now] once a week, I pick up the buckets and donate the hats to the hospitals.

Q. Do you get anyone to help you?

Anthony: My family drives me around and helps keep the business end going, because I'm not old enough to handle that part. They also help with shipping costs.

Q. Do you ever get feedback from people?

Anthony: Yes, we have a book full of cards and thank-you notes.

Q. What advice can you give to other kid volunteers?

Anthony: Go out there and try something - either join another program or start your own. Little by little, help your community become a better place. Even at a young age, you can make a difference.
