What is "Education Through Historic Preservation"?
In 1977, we co-authored the nationally acclaimed program, "Education
Through Historic Preservation (ETHP)." It was our intention from
the very beginning that the magic, beauty, and mystery of the old
houses of Louisiana would inspire and motivate our student artists.
The buildings themselves would become teachers and each landmark would
provide a different lesson, as well as a rich setting in which to
learn. In the process we have been privileged to work with some of
Louisiana's most famous landmarks.
ETHP has extended to Nachitoches, Louisiana and the two National Landmark
Plantations of the Cane River Creoles, Oakland and Magnolia. The program
has been presented in several Latin American countries and Canada
and used as a model for developing similar programs in those countries.
In 1982, ETHP received the first award for education given by the
National Trust for Historic Preservation. It is the subject of the
film, "The Magic of Homeplace: Learning from the Built Environment."
We have also received many awards as a result of our work on ETHP,
including the National George Washington Medal of Honor given by the
Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge.
