The student work, which you can see by clicking the Next buttons below,
was part of a much larger presentation made to the public at the Newcomb
Gallery of Art at Tulane University. The paired drawings of historical figures
and written biographical sketches were produced by Lloyd Sensat's Hahnville
High School art students in collaboration with the students of Rita Carlson
at Lakewood Elementary School and of Ann Buisson at R.J. Vial Elementary
School. The elementary students visited the high school art class in full
costume and were sketched by the older students. Then the elementary students
wrote about their characters and, during the opening of the major public
exhibition of the high school and college artists' pieces, served as guides
while remaining "in character" as their chosen historical figures.
The architectural drawings on display here are part of the high school students'
ongoing exploration of New Orleans - students took field trips to the French
Quarter to do on-site sketches, then worked from photographs and their sketches
to create finished, large-scale drawings. The various elements of our year-long
effort, too numerous to display here, included students at every age and
ability level from elementary through college and tapped into the vitality
and diversity of our entire community.
