Having
created characters for our stories we had to create homes for them. The
students then created fairy houses using Tropicana orange juice containers
which we cut down to size and which we covered with paper toweling and dried
flowers. The forest floor for the village was made up of potpourri that
contained many of the dried flowers we used to make the houses for the fairies.
It smelled wonderful! The result was a fairy village which we have in a
showcase outside our room. Every house has a fairy waiting outside its doors.
In art class the students also made paintings of their fairies. These
paintings hang in our classroom. In addition to this, the students made
drawings to go with their written stories. Click
here to see a Shockwave Flash presentation of the children's drawings.
In computer lab, the students typed out either a profile on their fairy
or their fairy tale. Students took photos of their fairies and houses
using a digital camera and they imported the photos into their documents.
One of the students, Andrew, was so inspired that he composed music for
our fairies. This became a multimedia experience for us all. The project
appealed to sight, smell, hearing and touch.
We are now working on reading and researching Shakespeare and "A Midsummer
Night's Dream." My students were pleased to discover that Shakespeare
liked fairies, too!
