Disney VoluntEARS - China

Project Mulan
Project Mulan The goal of Project Mulan is to help provide education to children who live in one of the most deprived regions of China. Participants in this program include Disney employees and business partners in Hong Kong. Participation is completely voluntary.

The focal point of these efforts is Guizhou, one of the poorest provinces in China. Over 50% of Guizhou's population is illiterate, amounting to 7 million people who are unable to read and write.

Disney VoluntEARS have decided to take action by founding Project Mulan. This effort includes fundraising activities that will enable VoluntEARS to build new schools in villages where previously there was no school and to repair or replace dilapidated existing schools. Funds are also going towards providing scholarships to students of teacher training schools in return for a commitment to service in the new schools being built after graduation. VoluntEARS are also working to provide pencils and paper, books and other materials to both pupils and teachers.

Disney VoluntEARS in China are working in close association with a local charity, Project Hope, which has been working in Guizhou for many years and built over 200 schools so far. In addition, VoluntEARS are working closely with Chinese education authorities.

In March of 2001, Disney committed to building the first Project Mulan School. Foundation stone was laid in June 2001 and the school opened in December of the same year. Disney VoluntEARS hope to raise enough money to build at least one school per year and to set up a Project Mulan scholarship fund to benefit as many children as possible.

Shanghai Sunrise at Children's Day
Shanghai Sunrise at Children's Day Disney has been celebrating Children's Day with the children in Shanghai since June 1, 1997. This year's celebration was the largest one of all. From May through June of 2002, Disney VoluntEARS led community activities to celebrate Children's Month. Activities included the Retro-active film showcase and outdoor carnival. One of the highlights of the month was Mickey and Minnie's special visit with 150 children from Shanghai Sunrise - a charitable organization to help children in need obtain a well-rounded education.
