Buzz Blasts Off!
Interview with Tim Allen

Tim Allen rockets into space a second time as Buzz Lightyear, Space Ranger from the planet Morph in the Gamma Quadrant of Sector 4. Tim, loved by audiences everywhere as Tim "the Tool Man" Taylor on "Home Improvement," delights in playing the cosmic comic character.

What's new in "Toy Story 2"?
The fun thing about "Toy Story 2" is the reversal of roles. In this film I take on the leadership role because Woody has left the room. I have to keep everybody together like he would have done. Tom yelled at me throughout most of the first movie. And now this time I get to be angry with him. He's very calm and gets all the good lines -- except for one. I get to tell him, "You are a toy," just like he told me in the first one. What's really great about the sequel is that the camaraderie between the toys is richer and fuller. The characters are fully developed and you discover more about them. You're going to laugh the same way. It's not just more, it's better.

What was it like watching "Toy Story 2" for the first time?
Watching the movie brought the child out in me. When I watched the movie, I related to my first cowboy toy, I got very sad about leaving toys behind, and I got very sad about putting toys in boxes. Watching it brought back a whole wonderful part of my life.

Was it hard to become Buzz again?
The easiest way to get into Buzz after an extended period is to say, "To infinity … and beyond!" I do this randomly to scare children in elevators. Young kids think that I've swallowed Buzz Lightyear. They think I've done something wrong.

Did you collect toys as a kid?
I collect toys now. I collect one-of-a-kind automobile models from the '50s and '60s. And I have a whole robot collection.

What was your favorite toy when you were young?
My favorite toy was Clamshell Barbie, she came with a little Corvette. Oops! No, I mean my favorite toy was Mission to Moon, a little plastic moon-mission control center. If you pressed a button, it shot an eye-piercing projectile at your brother!

TIM ALLEN (Buzz Lightyear) once again adds dimension and dementia to this complex and comic cosmic character. This fearless space ranger has come down to Earth a bit since his last outing but occasionally still has his head in the clouds. When his pal Woody is stolen, this loyal action figure blasts into action and leads the rest of the toys on a daring rescue mission to Al's Toy Barn and beyond. When Woody decides he doesn't want to go back to Andy, it's up to Buzz to remind him what it means to be a toy.

One of America's most beloved comics, Allen recently hung up his tool belt as Tim Taylor on "Home Improvement," which ended its hugely successful nine-year run with a highly rated finale. In the show, Allen brought his unique slant on masculinity to series television, which he described as "Men Are Pigs" at home.

Born in Denver and raised, from age 13, in the Detroit suburb of Birmingham, Allen was one of seven brothers and two sisters raised by his mother. A class cut-up, his favorite high school subject was shop, and his first true love was cars. He graduated from Western Michigan University in 1975 with a degree in TV production and went to work as a creative director for a small advertising firm in Detroit. Soon he moved from behind the camera to in front of it, as a performer and spokesman.

In 1979, on a dare from a friend, Allen made his first stand-up appearance at Detroit's Comedy Castle. Since then he has become "a 20-year overnight success," selling out concert venues around the country. He has won numerous awards, including a 1990 ACE Award, multiple People's Choice Awards, Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards, and a 1995 Golden Globe Award. Allen also cohosted the 1992 Emmy Awards® and has been nominated several times for an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. Allen's first book, "Don't Stand Too Close to a Naked Man," was a major success, topping the "New York Times" Bestseller List. His second book, "I'm Not Really Here," takes a comedic look at men in midlife and their relationships with wives, children, friends, the universe, and God.

Allen's feature film credits include starring in Disney's "The Santa Clause" and "Jungle 2 Jungle," Universal Pictures' "For Richer or Poorer," and "Galaxy Quest." He can also be heard reprising the voice of Buzz Lightyear in "Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins," now available only on video and Disney DVD.
