December 5, 1901: Walter Elias Disney, the fourth son of Elias and Flora Disney, is born in Chicago, Illinois.


J. Stuart Blackton creates the first cartoon, "Humorous Phases Of Funny Faces."


Walt's father, Elias, purchases a farm in Marceline, Missouri, 120 miles from Kansas City, and the family leaves Chicago for small-town life.


The first production Model T Ford is assembled in Detroit on October 1.


The average income is $963 and the average cost of a loaf of bread is 5 cents.


Elias Disney's health fails and he must sell the family farm in Marceline. He moves the family to Kansas City, Missouri, where he buys a newspaper route, and employs Walt and his older brother Roy as newspaper delivery boys.


Winsor McCay's "Gertie The Dinosaur," largely recognized as the first animated short, thrills audiences.
