All-Stars Playbook: How to Do a Volunteer Project

The Recap: Steps to Designing a Community Service Project
  1. Recruit Your Team. Find a small group of students who want to help plan the project.

  2. Get to Know Each Other. Use team-building activities to learn about interests and styles of working and communicating.

  3. Assess Community Needs. Use strategies such as brainstorming, drawing visions of your community, or taking a walk around the neighborhood to identify some things that your group wants to change.

  4. Analyze Community Needs. Why is this a need? What is the cause of the problem? Who else is working on the problem? Can we work together? What can we do?

  5. Select a Project. Here are some things to consider: How much time do we have? How many people do we have? How much money do we have? Do we need permission? Where will we do our project? Do we need transportation?

  6. Develop a Game Plan. Decide what needs to be done, who is going to do it, and when.

  7. The Project. Be clear in advance about what needs to happen during the project and who is going to do it.

  8. After the Project. Celebrate your accomplishments; recognize contributors and volunteers; and evaluate your project from beginning to end.
