Michael Eisner Address to Disney Cast Members -- September 14, 2001

On September 14th, the national Day of Prayer and Remembrance, Michael Eisner addressed several thousand Disney cast members gathered around the flag at the Burbank studio...

Today I stand here before you without the usual Disney pageantry, but with the usual Disney spirit. I thank you for coming to this plaza to show your support for community and company, your profound sense of compassion, your respect and your unity. American flag
We are all here today, not to be absorbed in ourselves, not to restore our own confidence, not to ameliorate our anxieties ... but to simply and quietly pay respects to those who are hurt physically or emotionally ... to think about those who passed away in New York and Washington and Pennsylvania ... to agonize for those who are waiting to find out if their friends and loved ones are resting in the rubble of the World Trade Center ... to pray for our country.

So, let us observe one minute of silence to feel not in anger although angry ... to suffer for the pain of the victims while not being personally in physical pain ... to pray for the people missing, the people missed ... the people looking and the people lost. Let us pray that those of us who are left are strong enough to help those who have been left behind.

And now let us take this minute to think selfless thoughts for those who have all-too-real reasons to think of themselves.

"Once a man has tasted freedom he will never be content to be a slave. That is why I believe that this frightfulness we see everywhere today is only temporary. Tomorrow will be better for as long as America keeps alive the ideals of freedom and a better life. All men will want to be free and share our way of life. There must be so much that I should have said, but haven't. What I will say now is just what most of us are probably thinking every day. I thank God and America for the right to live and raise my family under the flag of tolerance, democracy and freedom."
