The moment the tragedy happened on September 11th, Disney VoluntEARS sprang into action. These dedicated Disney cast members have literally given their blood, sweat and tears, doing whatever they can to help the victims, their families and the rescue workers. Here are just a few of the many ways in which Disney VoluntEARS have been working to make a difference, often with the help of business units from across the Company:

  • Many New York cast members joined in a spontaneous demonstration of support, lining up along the curbs of the Westside Highway to cheer on the police, fire fighters and emergency service workers driving by. One employee of Disney Publishing Worldwide, a certified EMT, went directly to St. Vincent's Hospital to volunteer her services and has volunteered for the fire-fighter relief effort.
  • Orlando VoluntEARS donated many hours, as well as bottled water and rain ponchos provided by Walt Disney World, to the six Central Florida Blood Bank branches. These VoluntEARS included trained medical personnel from Health Services, and the Industrial Engineering department helped the Blood Bank with an appointment system to manage lines.
  • At Edison Field, the home of our baseball team, the Anaheim Angels, a fundraising event was held that generated $780,710 in contributions. This tremendous effort was pulled together in less than 48 hours by cast members from Disneyland Resort, our television and radio stations, The Mighty Ducks and the Anaheim Angels, working closely with the Orange County Red Cross. Once again, our own Disney VoluntEARS were on hand to supplement the Red Cross volunteers in helping to collect donations and assisting with all aspects of the event.
  • On Friday, September 21, 650 VoluntEARS from Walt Disney World did their part in support of the multi-network two-hour broadcast to benefit victims of the terrorist attack. They utilized the Walt Disney World reservation system to take calls from people wishing to donate money, helping handle the more than 40,000 calls making pledges to the September 11 Telethon Fund.

The Walt Disney Company's VoluntEARS give back to their communities around the world in so many ways, not only in times of crisis but all year long - in the year 2000 alone, VoluntEARS contributed over 320,000 hours of service to their communities. On September 11th and the following days our cast members have offered their volunteer services providing medical assistance, making and delivering food for rescue workers, lending assistance at community centers for grieving families, staffing for fund-raising activities, organizing relief-fund drives, purchasing and delivering needed supplies, and offering general support for those working at the site of the World Trade Center Towers. We salute them for their generosity of spirit.
