Additional Support

As a company that touches so many aspects of American life, from television, radio and books to professional sports and live theater, The Walt Disney Company feels that it has a special responsibility to lend a hand in times of crisis. The Company has found many ways to put its resources to work to aid the relief efforts and to help the country cope in the aftermath of the tragedy. We share some of these efforts here, not to pat ourselves on the back but to thank the many employees of The Walt Disney Company and the many companies, relief organizations and private citizens who have helped us do our part.

  • Thanks to the hard work of cast members from Disneyland Resort, KABC-TV, KABC Radio, KLOS, Radio, ESPN Radio, Radio Disney, The Mighty Ducks and the Anaheim Angels, working closely with the Orange County Red Cross, a fundraising event that generated $780,710 in contributions was put together at the Angels' Edison Field in less than 48 hours. Many local businesses, including ARAMARK, our partner at the ballpark, showed up with donuts, cookies, water, drinks and even pizza for the Red Cross volunteers, Disney VoluntEARS and the public.

Tens of thousands showed up out of a common desire to assist the Red Cross efforts and just show their support for the victims, their families and those who are working around the clock in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania. Local fire departments parked their fire trucks outside the stadium and placed their boots on the ground to collect funds for the families of firefighters who lost their lives. These boots quickly filled to the brim. KABC-TV on-air talent greeted the crowd and conducted live updates on air. KABC Radio broadcast live from the site. Mighty Ducks and Angels players passed out flags and signed autographs. There were celebrities and ordinary citizens, all there for a single cause. A similar event featuring on-air personalities and others from KABC-TV, KABC Radio, KLOS, Radio, ESPN Radio and Radio Disney at Dodger Stadium raised $236,000.

Funds from both of these events are going to the Red Cross for disaster relief in New York and Washington, D.C., meaning that more than $1 million in contributions was generated in just two gatherings of Southern California citizens. The Edison Field and Dodger Stadium events were typical as, throughout the nation, Americans gathered as one to make a difference.

  • WPLJ-FM Morning Show Hosts Scott Shannon and Todd Petengill stayed on the air until 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. They took calls from listeners trapped in the World Trade Center towers prior to its collapse. They suspended all music and commercials, and talked on the air all day with callers. In the evening, WPLJ carried the audio feed of its sister TV station, WABC.
  • WABC set up a special "private" counseling hotline with local clergy for listeners. The station also provided a detailed listing of the most important phone numbers to call for giving blood, donation and information about lost friends and family. WABC also collected T-shirts for the rescue workers working on the site.
  • Times Square Studios in New York assembled box lunches for rescue workers over the weekend -- over 3,000 meals were provided.
  • Radio Disney and Disney Channel aired public service announcements featuring First Lady Laura Bush as part of the Express Yourself campaign. This was an important part of Mrs. Bush's efforts to reach children and families.
  • The Disney Store in Long Island, N.Y., was the collection point for other Stores in the area to donate items to the Salvation Army, such as: water bottles, nutrition bars, socks, work pants, gloves and work boots.
  • Disney Stores and Disney Publishing collectively donated thousands of t-shirts to rescue workers.
  • Disney Publishing donated 6,500 copies of the illustrated children's book "Across America, I Love You" to public libraries and schools around the country. This poetic tribute, connecting America's natural beauty to the phases of childhood, is being distributed in hopes of inspiring families and children in this challenging time. Disney Publishing is also making additional donations of books to the library in Rockaway Park, home of many emergency workers caught up in the events of September 11th and the site of a subsequent airline crash.
  • The Aida touring company, playing in Tempe, Ariz., The Lion King company in Los Angeles and New Amsterdam Theatre Group collected over $10,000 in donations for the American Red Cross following their performances.
